Monday, June 27, 2005Seattle Public Library, Central Branch, designed by Rem Koolhaas(This and all following pictures «borrowed» from The Seattle Public Library website)I came to look at this building with great skepticism, because although I like oddball buildings as much as anyone, I also expect buildings to perform the function they were built for–and, for you Lloyd Wright cultists out there (I’m an admirer without being a cultist), not to have leaky windows. Some of what I had read when this building went up made me very skeptical. I even blogged about it.First, I quoted from «Seattle Central Library, Seattle» by Sherri Olson, page 89, Architectural Record, July 2004:OMA director Rem Koolhaas [ed.: the library’s architect] believes the library as an institution has moralistically and unwisely positioned itself as the bastion of the book against the byte…»It’s not a matter of and/or,» says Koolhaas. «The modern library, especially in a cybercity [ed.: what exactly is a cybercity?] such as Seattle, must transform itself into an information storehouse aggressively orchestrating the coexistence of all available technologies.»Whenever I hear someone calling books (or films, or music, or art) either «content» or «information,» I want to reach for my gun.And I also wrote this:»…only 32 percent of the 412,000 square feet of the building is being used to store books. Can a building even be called a «library» if only a third of the space is being used for books? Maybe the building is really only a government office building with a library in it?»Info:http://jamestata.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.htmlEste es un comentario en un blog relacionado también al tema, Seattle public library, este comentario esta relacionado a el espacio de almacenaje de libros, esta persona cree que por tener solo el 32% de los 412,000pies cuadrados no se le puede llamar librería.En desacuerdo con esta opinión muy válida yo creo que si vemos la forma en que se ataca el programa es muy interesante ya que la librería en la actualidad está cambiando y en un futuro, será mucho más viable tener libros electrónicos que caben en una parte muy pequeña de un microchip a un libro físico que está utilizando un espacio físico muy grande, utiliza papel que es un producto que debe eliminarse por cuestiones ecológicas y tiende a deteriorarse, la cantidad de libros que se manejan en esta librería va de acuerdo a un estudio realizado para saber a cuantas personas les proporciona el servicio, regresando al caso en donde se cuestiona si es una librería o un edificio populista gubernamental, podríamos llegar a una conclusión de que se podría considerar como un centro comunitario, en donde se puedan encontrar muchas otras funciones como auditorio, zona de convivencia, cafetería, salones de idiomas, aéreas de estar, cuartos de conferencias y oficinas administrativas.
